After one and one-half days of meetings and project review, thirty five
members of the NC-140 Rootstock Project technical committee were hosted
by Dr. Ron Perry and Phil Schwallier at the MSU Clarksville Horticultural
Research Station to tour 90 acres of tree fruit plots.
Dr. Amy Iezzoni reviewed new selections of Prunus cerasus
with potential for use as sweet and sour cherry rootstocks at the MSU Clarksville
Horticulture Research Station.
District Fruit Agent Phil Schwallier explains an experiment
to determine trickle needs for apples on high density apple systems. He
is also Coordinator of the Clarksville Station.
Dr. Ron Perry says "get that camera out of my face!"
Dr. George Greene, observing a 'Liberty' tree in the NC-140
1992 Liberty/Geneva Rootstock trial at Clarksville said, " I had some
Liberty apples last fall and they were not too bad!"
Dr.'s Terrence Robinson, Cornell University, and Dave Feree,
Ohio State University, have been key players in the NC-140 Rootstock project
for many years.
The New England fruit industry was well represented by
Dr. Wes Autio of the University of Masschussetts and Jon Clements, University
of Vermont.
Dr. Rich Marini, Extension Specialist in Pomology at the
Virginia Polytechnical Institute (VPI), is the coordinator of the 1994 Gala
Apple Rootstock trial.
Win Cowgill and Jon Clements, Virtual Orchard Webmasters,
inspect a 'Liberty' apple tree in the 1993 Liberty NC-140 Apple Rootstock
Planting
